Do you know an amazing Senior Citizen? I know several. The man I am going to write about today I have known for almost ten years. He is a retired plumber and his wife died about six years ago. He is 90 years young.
Once a year Vernon takes off in his motor home and travels east. He is gone for months at a time. His usual trip is from California all the way to Montana and Wyoming and back. He lives alone and he cares deeply for his neighbors, who are not as fortunate as he is in their health issues. He has a large extended family who love him dearly.
When he is at home Vernon takes daily morning walks and swims in our large pool at the Mobile Home Park we live in.
He also has a creative side to him. He takes along with him on his trips an old portable typewriter. This typewrite is his constant companion. When he feels like it - he pulls off to the side of the road and writes a poem or a short story about the area he is in.
I have read his poems and his short stories and they are loaded with history and locations which are probably not on the map today. This friend of mine is an amazing cook and he bakes the best cookies you ever tasted. He brings his cookies to all the dinners we have in our mobile home park.
With so many senior citizens in such horrible health by the time they reach the age of eighty or ninety, it is nice to know there are some which can still get around and take care of themselves. Independence is a horrible thing to lose.
